When Patrick first came to Ireland
'twas not of his own accord
captured by pirate slave traders
as a shepherd he was sold
for a single piece of gold

While tending sheep in lonesome fields
to his mind one day occurred
all the words of the Holy Book
that ever he had heard
to his mind came every word

For six long years in ice and snow
he woke 'ere the break of day
and without fatigue or weariness
he to the Lord would pray
for six years he did pray

Oh then one day he heard a voice
saying, "Soon you'll leave this land"
So he set out for the coast and found a boat
and sailed away from Ireland
he escaped from Ireland

Back in his hometown with his kin
One night he had a dream
a man with letters in his fists
from that land of slavery
saying, "Come back to us please"

And so Paddy, he did sail
a man who'd been set free
and spent all his remaining days
setting his own captors free
from their chains of slavery

He chose weakness and poverty
over money and delight
for he said our Savior too
did choose for himself such a life
yes, he chose such a life

The color of his legacy
is of blue eternal sky
and the cup that he desired to drink
was of the martyr's lonely cry
and on March 17 he died.
